I just wanted to let you know what I've been up to recently in my idle moments in Radiohead.
Over the past year or so, I've written and recorded an album which I've called Familial. It will be released on Bella Union on 30th August, except for USA and Canada, where it will be released on 31st August through Nonesuch.

For those who don’t know or remember, Senor Chieftain Mews,as he likes to be addressed now, was our slightly disturbing host on ‘the most gigantic lying mouth of all time’ …. Well, his comrade in arms and occasional masseuse, Chris Bran (who has also been hugely involved in our webcasts since we started them back in 2000), has a pilot out of his new comedy called ‘This is Jinsy’ .. it went out last Monday night on BBC 3 and you can still watch it on the BBC iplayer, but only for a few more days… hurray whilst stocks last… Go check it out .. If we are on the subject of things you should watch then allow me to point you in the direction of the film ‘1 2 3 4’. It was written and directed by an old friend of ours from Oxford, Giles Borg. Giles was a true mensch of the Oxford scene back in the day .. he directed videos (Colin starred in one he made for the Candyskins, and it's on youtube..),and made a fine documentary on Ride. Well, he’s made his first feature film and it’s the story of an indie band forming and trying to get a deal … Sound familiar?...I love it.. You can see a trailer of it at:

Senor Chieftain Mews("the most gigantic lying mouth of all time"DVDに登場している怪しいホスト）の友人Chris BranがBBC 3で脚本を書いているというコメディ番組「This is Jinsy」、Giles Borg（脚本・監督）の映画「1 2 3 4」を紹介しています。

Giles Borgはバンドとも昔からの友達で、彼の制作したthe CandyskinsのビデオにはColinが出演していたことも...。オックスフォードシーンでは一目置かれていた存在の彼が今回初の長編映画を制作し、Edはとても気に入ってる様子。映画は英国各地で近日公開だそうです。

Edは6 Musicは第一に音楽を優先する唯一のラジオ局、特に貴重な局であること、閉鎖はミュージシャンや音楽業界人、本当の音楽ファン達にとってとてもショックな出来事であること、そしてJohn Peelの精神を生かし続けて欲しい等とも書き綴っています。

Mark Thompson, Herr Director General of the BBC, announced yesterday that 6 music was to be closed ... which is obviously a ludicrous decision for those who actually love hearing great music on the radio ... so I've written to the BBC Trust, who apparently have the ability to reverse the decision, and if you feel this way inclined the link is https://consultations.external.bbc.co.uk/departments/bbc/bbc-strategy-review/consultation/consult_view
Here's what I wrote:

To whom it may concern,

I am writing regarding the news today that 6 Music is going to be closed, in the hope that you reconsider this decision. To be honest I, along with a vast number of other musicians, music industry types and real music fans, are completely shocked and baffled by this news. I wonder if those who made this decision are actually aware of the hugely important role that 6 music plays in fostering and promoting new bands, as well as still playing the likes of the band that I am in. It literally is the radio lifeblood for music outside of the mainstream. Not to denigrate Radio's 1 and 2, but it really is the only station that puts music first, and that's from a punters point of view and not some bloke in a band. Nowhere else can you hear an archived session track from T Rex juxtaposed next to Midlake's latest release. As David Bowie, put it ... it keeps the spirit of John Peel alive.

Please realise the impact and severity of closing this station down. It will be a huge blow for new bands and their labels. It's not enough to 'refocus' Radio's 1 and 2 as 6 music does a very specific thing. What you have with 6 Music is a gem of a radio station, it is doing what no other station in the world does or can possibly do. Remember it is also still relatively young, give it time. You also finally have a fantastic and seemingly settled line up of DJ's. Please get behind it and from what I can gather about it's annual budget of £6m, it surely punches way above it's weight in terms of cultural relevance and importance.

so yes rumour has it that the canadians came to the copenhagen summit demanding to increase their co2 emmissions.
principally cuz of the tar sands and how much money the faceless motherfuckers in the oil industry stand to make out of it.. who are obviously bankrolling the government there.
i find it hard to correlate this all with the canadians i know who are very forward thinking..
the frightening thing about it is that just such a project could send the climate over the tipping point.

Hey-
I'm doing a low key solo thing at the Cambridge Corn Exchange on the 25th of Feb.

It's because a friend of mine Tony Juniper (who used to be head of Friends of the Earth and who i went to the Copenhagen Summit with) is hoping to become one of the first Green Members of Parliament in the UK.
And i wanted to help him out somehow.

I think he'd be a great MP as he knows a lot about dealing with the murky brown waters of politics when it comes to the environment, but has a positive energy with a healthy contempt for the way they operate. And wouldn't it be nice to have someone there who is actually doing more than paying lip service to climate change? And maybe rip shit up a little?

Now normally i wouldn't get involved in politics like this... but lets face it.. it aint labour or the tories is it?!? so..
and anyway he bought me a pint and twisted my arm. it's a slippery slope i know.

what else do i have to say? oh yes the proceeds from said event go to the Green Party of which Tony is a member.
and support will be offered by local person Pete Um.

tickets will go on sale from the waste shop tommoro at midday.

now remember it s a local gig for local people.............. err like me.

Radioheadがハイチ支援のためライヴを急遽決定。

ライヴは1月24日(日)、ハリウッドにあるThe Fonda内のThe Music Boxにて。
チケットはTicketmasterで21日(木)20:00～23日(土)11:00（日本時間：22日13:00～24日4:00）までオークション形式での発売となるようです。（1000枚）
このライヴの収益はすべてOxfamのハイチ支援基金に寄附されるとのこと。

現在バンドは目撃談もあったとおりLAに滞在中でレコーディングの真っ最中。
Thomは20日の夜にはHollywood Roosevelt Hotelで行われたハイチ救済のチャリティ・イベントにも参加し、Nigelらと共にDJを担当していた模様。（こちら参照）

Radiohead for Haiti
We're doing a show this Sunday (24th January) to raise funds for the relief effort in Haiti. The venue is The Music Box Theatre at The Fonda in Los Angeles, doors at 7pm. All proceeds are going to the Oxfam Haiti relief fund. We're trying to raise as much money as possible, so tickets will be sold by auction at this site from 8pm tonight until 11am Saturday (PST):

コペンハーゲンから戻ってから、深刻な時期として沢山の事をこなしているというThom。
「僕に会う人みんながそれについて話したがっている…誰もが腹を立て、絶望している。そして僕はそれについて話すときは依然ポジティヴでいようとしている。…たぶんこれらの会議でポジティヴに何かが決まるのだろうと単純に考えていた世界中のまともな人たちの心の奥で何かが呼び覚まされたのかもしれない。」と。
こういった強い反応で期待もあるけど、それには建設的なチャンネルが必要だとも。

i guess this time of year is a time for serious reflection and i have been doing a lot of that since coming back from copenhagen.
you know what has stunned me coming back is the anger you can taste in the air about this, everybody i meet wants to talk about it.. everyone is angry and despairing and i have tried to remain positive when i talk to them about it.. it has perhaps awakened something in the back of the mind of sane people throughout the world who perhaps naively assumed that something positive would come of these talks.
with such a strong reaction i hope perhaps that people are starting to join the dots and our unquestioning worship of an unlimited gluttonous carbon based economy could unravel in just enough time.
sane people in government, in the media, and on the streets are being shaken reluctantly from a dream looking at the children around them and are getting angrier than they have ever been before.
but this energy needs a constructive channel.

i have been trying to write something about my impressions of being there etc, but then Ben Stewart from Greenpeace happened to send me something he wrote on the last night which is so much better than anything i've done so far so i'll leave it to him for now

"The most progressive U.S. President in a generation comes to the most important international meeting since the Second World War and delivers a speech so devoid of substance that he might as well have made it on speakerphone from a beach in Hawaii. His aides argue in private that he had no choice, such is the opposition on Capitol Hill to any action that might challenge the dominance of fossil fuels in American life. And so the nation which put a man on the moon can’t summon the collective will to protect men and women back here on Earth from the consequences of an economic model and lifestyle choice that has taken on the mantel of a religion.
Then a Chinese Premier who is in the process of converting his Communist nation to that new faith (high-carbon consumer capitalism) takes such umbrage at Obama’s speech that he refuses to meet – refuses, in fact, to do much of anything beyond sulking in his hotel room, as if this were a teenager’s house party instead of a final effort to stave off the breakdown of our biosphere.
Late in the evening the two men meet and cobble together a collection of paragraphs which they call a ‘deal’, although in reality it has all the meaning and authority of a bus ticket, not that it stops them affixing their signatures to it with great solemnity. Obama’s team then briefs the travelling White House press pack – most of whom, it seems, understand about as much about global climate politics as our own lobby hacks know about baseball – and before we know it the New York Times and CNN are declaring the birth of a ‘meaningful’ accord.
Meanwhile a friend on an African delegation emails to say that he and many fellow members of the G77 block of developing countries are streaming into the corridors after a long discussion about the perilous state of the talks, only to see Obama on the television announcing that the world has a deal. It’s the first they’ve heard about it, and a few minutes later, as they examine the text, they realise very quickly that it effectively condemns their continent to a century of devastating temperature rises.
By now the European leaders – who know this thing is a farce but have to present it to their publics as progress – have their aides phoning the directors of civil society organisations spinning that the talks have been a success. A success? This deal crosses so many of the red lines laid out by Europe before this summit started that there are scarlet skid marks across the floor of the Bella Centre, and one honest European diplomat tells us this is a ‘shitty shitty deal.’
Quite.
This deal is beyond bad. It contains no legally binding targets and no indication of when or how they’ll come about. There isn’t even a declaration that the world will aim to keep global temperature rises below 2 degrees C – instead leaders merely ‘recognise the science’ behind that vital threshold, as if that were enough to prevent us crossing it. The only part of this deal anyone sane came close to welcoming was the $100bn global climate fund, but it’s now becoming apparent that even that’s largely made up of existing budgets, with no indication of how new money will be raised and distributed so poorer countries can go green and adapt to climate change.
Not all of our politicians deserve the opprobrium of a dismayed world. Our own Ed Miliband fought hard on no sleep for a better outcome, while President Lula of Brazil offered to financially assist other developing countries to cope with climate change and put a relatively bold carbon target on the table. But the EU didn’t move on its own commitment (one so weak we’d actually have to work hard not to meet it) while the United States offered nothing and China stood firm.
Before the talks began I was of the opinion that we would only know Copenhagen was a success when plans for new coal-fired power stations across the developed world were dropped. If the giant utilities saw in the outcome of Copenhagen an unmistakable sign that governments were now determined to act, and that coal plants this century would be too expensive to run under the regime agreed at this meeting, then this summit would have succeeded. Instead, as the details of the agreement emerged last night we received reports of Japanese opposition MPs popping champagne corks as they savoured the possible collapse of their new government’s carbon targets. It’s not just that we haven’t got to where we needed to be, we’ve actually ceded huge ground. There is nothing in this deal – nothing – that would persuade an energy utility that the era of dirty coal is over. And the implications for humanity of that simple fact are profound.
I know we greens are partial to hyperbole. We use language as a bludgeon to direct attention to the crisis we’re facing, and you’ll hear much more of it in the coming days and weeks. But really, it’s no exaggeration to describe the outcome of Copenhagen as an historic failure that will live in infamy. In a single day, in a single space, a spectacle was played out in front of a disbelieving audience of people who have read and understood the stark warnings of humanity’s greatest scientific minds - and what they witnessed was nothing less than the very worst instincts of our species articulated by the most powerful men who ever lived.
I will leave the last word to the late Kurt Vonnegut Jr., who would have given voice to the insanity of Copenhagen better than I ever could, and whose poem Requiem is perhaps appropriate at this moment: ‘When the last living thing, has died on account of us, how poetical it would be if Earth could say, in a voice floating up, perhaps from the floor of the Grand Canyon, “It is done. People did not like it here”.’

また来年1月にはスタジオへ戻りニュー・アルバムの制作を再スタートする予定であることも。「自分たちがやってることに心から興奮している。でも当然これ以上は明かせないよ。」

A rant and some other stuff

I haven’t spoken to Thom yet, but judging by his entries here and reading today’s papers the outcome of Copenhagen is a bloody disgrace … I wanted to put something up on DAS, as a kind of personal round-up to the year (also because I rather pathetically don’t contribute much to this), so excuse me if I kick off in a somewhat dejected manner, because in fact none of what I write seems at all relevant or important in the face of serious climate change …. This is the bottom line for all our lives whether we choose to face it or not, and believe me I choose not to most of the time in the name of my own personal happiness and subsequently of those around me … anyway here goes ..
I read an interesting book in the Summer by a man called Terence McKenna, entitled “Food of the Gods” .. his hypothesis is that certain natural plants have been integral in explaining mankind’s development in the spheres of language, intelligence and culture… it’s really fascinating, but a particular passage popped out at me, whilst reading, and it seems particularly relevant now:
“Looking down on Los Angeles from an airliner, I I never fail to notice that it is like looking at a printed circuit: all those curved driveways and cul de sacs with the same little modules installed along each one. As long as the ‘Reader’s Digest’ stays subscribed to and the TV stays on, these modules are all interchangeable parts within a very large machine. This is the nightmarish reality….. the creation of the public as a herd. The public has no history and no future, the public lives in a golden moment created by a credit system which binds them ineluctably to a web of illusions that is never critiqued. This is the ultimate consequence of having broken off the symbiotic relationship with the Gaian matrix of the planet. This is the consequence of lack of partnership; this is the legacy of imbalance between sexes; this is the terminal phase of a long descent into meaninglessness and toxic existential confusion.”
Now, I don’t walk around with this stuff in my head every hour of each day, in fact the opposite would be true. I’m happy feeling so grateful to the deck of cards that I’ve been dealt. Yet it’s always there, this knowing that we are all living in “The Age of Stupid’ … I’m sure most people feel the same way….. Yet our leaders seem incapable of leading … managing would seem a better word, or rather mismanaging…… Leadership implies wisdom; it implies vision and dynamism; the ability to foresee problems, create solutions and see them through … does that sound like our leaders? NO it doesn’t… And why is this not the case? What is preventing them from leading? Is it the power of big business/corporations/ the financial industries? It looks increasingly like it … vested fucking interests, no degree of what’s fair for all … plain and simple self-interest. I don’t know about you but most people I know don’t make decisions solely on what works best for them … it’s a balance between what is good for others too…
This is officially a rant now and I may not post it .. apologies to my brothers in the band if they are reading this and don’t like it .. tell me I’m being an arse and I’ll take it down..

Apologies for an about turn in mood here, but I want to write something positive …. When we returned from touring Mexico, Brasil, Argentina and Chile for the first time this year I intended to post something about the amazing experience we had .. well I didn’t of course, so here goes. Thank you to everyone who came out and saw us, those shows were particularly special .. there was something unique and marked about every night .. and to play our music in that magical continent .. what an honour .. Thank you so much for having us. I’d also like to add in the dates we did in the Summer, our first visit to Austria and Prague and our first Polish show since ’94 …. And then of course there was Leeds and Reading … Amazing for us, particularly the last night at Reading.. it felt like a fitting finale to it all .. Thank you thank you thank you…..
The vibe in the camp is fantastic at present, and we head off into the studio in January to continue on from the work we started last Summer .. I am so genuinely excited about what we’re doing, but for obvious reasons I can’t divulge anything more.. anyway we all love surprises don’t we? 10 years ago we were all collectively (that’s the band) in the land of Kid A .. and although hugely proud of that record, it wasn’t a fun place to be .. What’s reassuring now, is that we are most definitely a different band, which should therefore mean that the music is different too and that is the aim of the game….keep it moving.
Inevitably, there’s all this best and worst of the decade list type stuff going on at present and I was going to do my office chart for films of the year, then it turned into of the decade, but then having watched ‘Harold and Maude’ again the other night it’s just 10 great films to watch over Xmas …..

There has to be a Bond film there and although definitely not the best I have a bit of a soft spot for Moonraker, … I always loved the Rio and South American scenes .. so much so that when it came out as a kid I went on my own and watched three consecutive matinee showings of it .. also those in the know will have noticed that Hal Ashby directed both ‘Harold and Maude’ and ‘Being there’ … he was an incredible director, well I only know those two films of his, but I intend to check out the others.
One last thing .. this year I got embroiled with the whole file-sharing issue… my whole angle has been is that it’s too easy to blame all the current ills of the music industry squarely at the feet of those who illegally file-share, which is what the major labels have been doing .. they don’t seem to want to take any responsibility for our current state of affairs .. well I think that’s bollocks and hypocritical, and of course the whole subject is not black and white, which they like to portray it as … there are no clear cut heroes and villains in this. But if you’re interested there is a fantastic podcast by one of our national treasures Stephen Fry .. he speaks so eloquently on the subject, with such good sense, reason and pragmatism .. here’s the link:

well ... i am truly disgusted about the way things have ended here. if you read in tommorrows headlines that a deal was reached?? remember it was nothing like what was needed and was filed by a bored complicit press who needed to show something for two weeks of crap.. and that it reflected the wests inability to lead decisively.
that it will make alarm bells ring throughout the world.
we have no international agreement. this is all too too late.
i feel deeply traumatized by the whole experience. if you'd been there you would also have been.

and as i wrote the previous entry my battery goes dead and obama walks past with a very grim expression, everyone thought he was stroming out but no he'd just been in talks with the chinese. just now a french delegate tells me that brazil has stormed out of the talks. this is all so sad. still peace and goodwill to all men. love and understanding.
just no more business as usual ok?? this is all starting to really feel like some enormous vaguely pointless corporate expo.

when is a good time to give up and go and eat something? leaders are still apparently still having heated discussions. where? no-one knows? there has been a debate going on how to vote on any decision.. but it is in a language of numbers and procedure. i have had a load of cameras and recorders stuck in my face now and tried to say what and outsider walking in to this madness might think. one who is perhaps concerned about the rise of global temperatures. one who has experienced this first hand maybe. one who may have even voted in their leader on the basis that they may do the right thing on this issue.. only to see them surrounded by this weird fog. i hope that the fog clears sometime tonight. but that they dont pretend to have an agreement that they do not. i hope this is not over.

ok so now there are texts/ drafts flying around all over the place. just when things feel like they are falling apart rumours that europe will commit to bigger cuts? hysteria and confusion is in the air. there has been a request for leaders to stay an extra night? what 'on earth' is going on? i pray something. i pray that something comes of this process. that all these people for all these years, all these flights to copenhagen all this hot air has some meaning. and in the midst of it all i take to bbc radio 1 and am asked 'yeah but is climate change really real' etc etc. oh for gods sake.

Hello. I arrived at the copenhagen summit yesterday afternoon.
I felt compelled to come to find some hope from these talks. for our kids and theirs. judge that as you will.
i camewith a friend of mine Tony Juniper ( He was previously head of Friends of the Earth when i was involved with them to get the climate bill passed in the UK. a Framed copy of which i have on my wall at home. ) So is there any? well yesterday there seemed to be.
the first person i met was the famous john vidal from the guardian who said things were moving again. then we talked to others who said the same. got technical for a bit most of which i can follow but i get lost on the forest stuff and still can't piece together how you can have a kyoto style agreement and another for america et all running at the same time. but then i sat in on a uk press briefing with Ed Miliband. and he made things clear in some ways.
yesterday there is a lot of brinksmanship, the americans offering money seemed. but no-one was talking 40 percent cuts by 2020. and the negotiations had an obvious G8 vibe about them. the west dictating terms and bizarrely assuming that the science could be bartered.. !!! arguing about who cuts what??? that somehow the amount we have to cut our emissions is negotiable?? what a crock of shit. may i humbly suggest that we remove the professional negotiators who seem to relish the negotiations for their own sake. miliband talked about a hundred square brackets in the document waiting to be filled.
it feels like the developed countries are trying to wrestle some sort of business as usual out of this. despite huge domestic and global political pressure. and the imminent demise of life on earth.
these cuts are non negotiable, they are the facts. it is not surprising that the developing countries find this difficult to stomach and sign up too. that and the mysterious lack of transparency to the process.

what is frustrating so far is americas attitude. hilary clintons speech was apparently still trying to shift responsibilty for emissions around... which is just frankly nuts.
obama said nothing though i have not seen all the speech yet. i feel very sad for all americans i know who hold so much hope for this man. still.. i guess the day isnt over. its 3pm on friday ( though it should have finished by now). and our leaders are fully aware they are in disgrace. and fully aware that they cannot draw up an agreement and force it upon us all without us immediatley seeing the holes in it.

the atmosphere here is deepy distressing at the moment though, with many of the suits obviously puzzling how to make this look good how to spin something positive.
frankly they should have kept all the NGOs in here. throwing them out was an absolute disgrace.. ( though some are now back in )right now they should tearing this place apart with their bare hands, registering the utter disgust that the rest of the world will feel if today ends like this. and i say if. there is a prayer and meditation room here. i may have to go and sit it and dodge all these cameras.

tony just told me a bunch of latin american countries just walked out. at least someone is registering their anger here. people are being too reasonable.

especially in light of the Copenhagen summit coming up in December where our glorious leaders must decide how we structure our plans to tackle climate change.
The global premier of it will happen on the 21st of september or 22nd depending on your time zone.

So here's a new song, called 'These Are My Twisted Words'.

We've been recording for a while, and this was one of the first we finished.
We're pretty proud of it.

There's other stuff in various states of completion, but this is one we've been practicing, and which we'll probably play at this summer's concerts. Hope you like it.

Thomの投稿で新曲「Harry Patch (In Memory Of)」のリリックおよび、タイトルとなっているHarry Patchについて、そして、ダウンロードへのリンク。

タイトルとなっているHarry Patchとは7月25日に他界した第一次世界大戦の英陸軍兵の最後の生存者、ハリー・パッチ氏（享年111）のことで、
ThomはDASで「数年前、BBCのRadio 4の"Today"という番組で、彼のとてもエモーショナルなインタビューを聞いたんだ」「彼に戦争の話は、僕に深い影響を与えた。それは、偶然彼の死の数週間前にレコーディングした楽曲のインスピレーションとなった。」と。
また、「レコーディングは教会で、生演奏で行ったんだ。ストリングスはJonnyがアレンジした。この曲が最後の生存者としての彼の記憶を、正当に表現できていることを切に願っている」
「ハリーのような人たちが思い出させてくれない限り、僕らの世代は戦争の生み出す真の恐怖を簡単に忘れてしまう。僕らが忘れないことを願っている」と綴り、
パッチ氏による、「着ていた軍服に関わらず、我々は皆、犠牲者だった」という発言を引用し、「平和と理解」と締めくくっています。

なお、ダウンロードの価格は1ポンド。すべての収益金は英国在郷軍人会に送られることになっています。

Recently the last remaining UK veteran of the 1st world war Harry Patch died at the age of 111.
I had heard a very emotional interview with him a few years ago on the Today program on Radio4.
The way he talked about war had a profound effect on me.
It became the inspiration for a song that we happened to record a few weeks before his death.
It was done live in an abbey. The strings were arranged by Jonny.
I very much hope the song does justice to his memory as the last survivor.

It would be very easy for our generation to forget the true horror of war, without the likes of Harry to remind us.
I hope we do not forget.

As Harry himself said
"Irrespective of the uniforms we wore, we were all victims".

This morning the Today program played the song for the first time and now it is available to download from our website.

その訃報を聞き、DASに哀悼の意を表しています。

We are very sad to hear about Merce Cunningham’s death yesterday, aged ninety.
Merce invited us to take part in his Split Sides project, in October 2003. It was a collaboration of music and dance, but one where each of the elements - set, costume,
choreography and music - were randomly combined, to create a performance around chance. He was very kind and hospitable, and invited us around to his apartment the night before the show. He showed us his computer program which generated random sequences of gesture and movement for wire-framed mannequins, like Kraftwerk’s Robots. He also showed us, the next night, that discipline and focus can create the space for an unexpected moment, when something new can suddenly exist: such a contrast to the scripted world of rock.

Kraftwerkのロボットみたいなワイヤーフレームのマネキンのジェスチャーや動きのランダム配列で育成されたコンピュータ・プログラムを見せてくれたよ。...など思い出も綴っています。

...RadioheadのマネージャーBrian Messageが立ち上げると発表された新レーベルはPolyphonicといって、Message氏の会社ATCと、MAMA Group、アーティストマネージメント事務所Nettwerk Music Groupとが提携し設立。まだ詳細は公表されていませんが、デジタルリリースをメインとしRadioheadがIn Rainbowsリリース時に行った購入者が価格を決める...といったようなリリース等も計画されているそうです。
Polyphonicではアーティストが自身の作品の著作権を所有でき、アーティストとの利益配分も50/50にするとのこと。

Two days ago a historic meeting took place in Heaven (!) under Charing Cross railway station in London. A group of us Featured Artists, that’s anyone who has put a record out, gathered for the inaugural meeting of the Featured Artist Coalition (FAC). Traditionally in the music industry two groups have been shut out of any negotiations and rights/revenue carve ups … and that’s the artists and the fans. The formation of the FAC is all about changing this state of affairs … hopefully we can not only do artists justice but also the people who listen to our music. After all, in order to be a musician you have to be a music fan …… And first and foremost this is about trying to ensure that young bands and artists get a fair deal and are able to make a living in the digital era ….
I’m going to post up stuff about this because it’s an exciting time and also because there is going to be some seriously heavy PR aimed at us by the interested parties who might deem the FAC a threat …there’s a lot of fear out there in the biz….
Timing is everything and with a man like Barack Obama in the Whitehouse, it’s a moment to set up a really great and dare I say it noble organisation. That word is not often used these days, it seems a bit old-fashioned in our ironic, knowing times …. Well, too bad, I think it’s appropriate.
We are in Mexico city, our first show tonight…the last time we were here ‘my iron lung’ ep had just been released... it was 1994 …. We then head on down to Brasil, Argentina and Chile … I’ve waited years for this! ….. Un abrazo Edx

Rest in Peace Dear Oliver Postgate

I woke up this morning to hear the Oliver Postgate has died, which makes me very sad.
His childrens Tv shows changed my life and my childrens so we wish him well wherever it is he is off to next.
He had a great website as well, was very politically minded.
Anyone who is involved in the upcoming climate negotations in Poland might, in memory of him and all his amazing work, want to read this essay from 2006

...画期的な新しい法律が同意されようとしているが、何かが欠けている。-それは政府が英国の国際航空、輸送排ガスについては法律の対象外としているからである。..とのことで、より厳しい法律を作ってもらうべくThe Big Askではちょっと変わった方法で署名運動を行っています(UK在住の人が対象のようですが...）。
まずサイトへ行き、飛行機の席を予約するとこから始まります。
席を選び予約し、名前、住んでいる町を登録。その後コメント記入...。夏（7月）に飛行機が飛び発つ＝議会に提出...という感じでしょうか。
ちなみにThomは22Hのシートを確保しているようです。

Rained on in Washington again

To everyone who made it, and put up with the torrents on the lawn, and came early to catch the Liars and our show, thank you so much for braving the deluge. I hope you heard what you came for, the music and lights diverting you from the wet. We got out of there around three am, and the pic shows Jonny waiting in the loading bay whilst the water streams across the tarmac. We've had floods at Bull Creek, lightning at the RFK stadium, so there must be some kind of Biblical fix between us and DC. Frogs next time?

芝生の上でどしゃ降りに耐えながらがんばった人達、Liarsと僕らのショーを見るために早くから来た人、大洪水に立ち向かってくれて本当にありがとう。ちゃんと聴こえたかなぁ。音楽と照明がズブ濡れの不快感を取り除いてたらいいんだけど。
僕達が外に出たのは夜中3時をまわってた。写真は水がひくのを待ってるJonny。
僕達はBull Creekでも洪水にあってるんだよね、RFK stadiumでの雷とか（※）。僕達は（ワシントン）DCとは何らかの聖書的処置が必要だな。次はカエルとか？

Radiohead take to the road on Monday (via a plane, unfortunately) to start in Florida with the first show of their 2008 tour.

Following on from their posting on the 19th December and the commissioned report on touring and CO2 generation, we’ve developed a new section of the site that gig goers can visit: the most gigantic flying mouth for some time.

Here you can try out our carbon calculator and compare different transport methods for getting to and from the venue. The list of tour dates will give you public transport information where available, and where not, there may be venue incentives for car sharing. There will also be weekly postings from Radiohead’s production team on how the band has addressed their own touring carbon footprint and made it easier for fans to reduce theirs. You can discuss our successes and more importantly, our failings at waste-central, post up more local travel information where we haven’t and make friends with other people going to your show.

Radioheadはradiohead.comサイト内に二酸化炭素排出量計算機機能を搭載したページ「The most gigantic flying mouth for some time.」をオープンしたようです。
これはファンにライヴへ行く手段についてよく考えて欲しい...というバンドからの申し出でもあるようです。
このページでは2008年の公演会場へのリンクをクリックし、どのような交通手段でそこまで行くかを出発地点から選択して行き、二酸化炭素排出量を計算することができます。
複数のライヴに行く場合もその過程を繰り返して行くと、その都度その排出量をセーブし加算していくことで自分が一回のツアーでどれだけ二酸化炭素を排出しているかというのがわかる仕組みになっています。
w.a.s.t.e.centralにはライヴ会場ごとのグループがありますが、そこで友達を作る事はもちろん、現地の交通事情等の共有も促しています。
また、バンドが今回試みているライヴの質を落とさず二酸化炭素排出を減らしてツアーを行っていくのかという情報も提示していくようです。

w.a.s.t.e has 40 pairs of tickets to give away for the afternoon performance and 40 pairs of tickets to give away for the evening performance.

You can apply for a maximum of one pair of tickets per household and you must make your own way to and from the event.

先日Sun誌で公表されたThomのグラストンベリー不参加についての発言に関して広まってしまっている誤解への釈明、およびグラストンベリー側が近年より調査している参加者の利用する交通機関のデータにも掲載されています。

「Sun誌のインタヴューでは二酸化炭素排出量の研究でその影響が観衆の移動によるものがとても大きいことにショックを受けて、公共の交通手段で行ける様な場所でのライヴをやろうとしている..ということを話したんだ。
グラストンベリーに参加しないでロンドンでライヴをするとも言ったけど、交通機関云々という理由だけじゃなくて、グラストンベリーに行く人達にとって僕達がまた出演するのは早過ぎるしうんざりするんじゃないかって..（観客として）ただ遊びにいけたらなぁって思ってた。
けど残念な事に、新聞にはよくあることだけど話の文脈から切り離されて交通機関に問題があるからグラストンベリーに参加しないってことになって、それが広まってしまった。
このことについてEavis（グラストンベリーの主催者）と話して、あらゆる誤解について謝罪したんだ。そしたら彼等はまったく冷静で、バスや電車での移動でどうやって車の量を最小限にするかについての資料を僕に送ってきたんだ。正直感動したよ。彼等もがんばってるんだよね。沢山の人が彼等のように一生懸命になってくれれば...政府もね。
クラストンベリーを楽しんで。僕らも2009には...？

A week or so ago i helped launch a campaign in europe with Friends of the Earth to get citizens in countries throughout europe to ask for their governments to commit in law to reducing carbon emmisions.
it was a very encouraging but very full on day.. i never sleep the day before such things.

anyway,

the last thing i did was talk to a UK newspaper called the SUn, which is owned by one of my least favourite people Rupert Murdoch. In the course of the interview i mentioned that we had a carbon footprint study commisioned and the biggest shock was the significance of the all travel to the show by the audience.
as we have said before we are trying to concentrate as much as we can on playing places with some form of transport infrastructure other than cars.. and encouraging you lot as politely as we can without sounding preachy to consider car sharing if other things are not available. it is difficult to know how best to go about this. especially when we are going to have use planes to travel during the tour when there is no alternative. cue endless meetings and scratching of heads.

I also mentioned that we were not playing Glastonbury this year but were doing our own shows in London.
Not because of transport issues but because the festival goers at Glastonbury were more than likely sick of the sight of us.. it felt a little early to be doing it again, we felt as if we had only just played there.

unfortunately, as is the way with such newspapers my words were taken out of context and implied we were not playing Glastonbury because there was no public transport infrastructure. well that's bollocks.

but these things spread.

i have been talking to the Eavis's about this and apologised for any misunderstanding and they are totally cool with it.
Today Emily & Michael sent me though some stuff about how they are trying to minimise car use as much as they can.. with buses and train trips etc.
To be honest its pretty impressive. They have obviously been busting a gut about it. I wish more people were thinking as hard them.

Like the government for example.

Change of plan
Radiohead have been forced at the last minute to change the venue for their free London show from the Rough Trade East record shop to the adjoining venue, 93 Feet East.

On the advice of the police and the local council, it was decided to change the venue to the larger one in the interests of public safety and due to the size of the crowd that turned up for the event. Rough Trade and the band apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Allocated wristbands only remain valid for the new venue. Doors open at 9pm prompt. There will be no admittance to anyone without a wristband and there will be no screens or speakers outside the venue - however the show will still be webcast from www.radiohead.tv!

Radioheadは本日、ロンドンのRough Trade Eastで無料インストア・ライブを行う様です。
ライブはIn Rainbowsからの曲による短いセットの予定で、開場は16日午後7時(現地時間)、スタートは午後8時頃になるそうです。先着順とのことで整理番号が発行されるようですが、すでに列が出来てる模様。
また、Jonnyは少人数しか入れない為、もし許可がおりれば入れなかった人の為にスピーカーとモニターを外に設置して会場内の模様を映し出すとも書き込んでいます。また、この模様はウェブキャストにて放映予定。
ウェブキャスト閲覧のリンク等は後ほどアップされる模様。

So, we've got a small gig tonight.

It's in London at the Rough Trade East shop on Brick Lane, and we're planning to play a short set of in rainbows material. It's very limited free entry, first come first served. Also, as it might be a little uncomfortable for anyone queuing early, they're planning a numbering system so people at the front of any queue can get snacks and toilet breaks in the store. Good bagels round there. But dress warm...doors won't open until 7, and we'll play at about 8.

For those who can't get in - and it's pretty small in there - we'll have some screens and speakers outside, if we're allowed. I think we are. And we'll also webcast it. I'll put the link up here, as well as any other info, later today.

Hope you can make it - should be....interesting. Us being us, we're taking far too many instruments.....

Earlier this year we asked an Oxford company called Best Foot Forward to look at the carbon and ecological footprints of two recent Radiohead tours, with the aim of reducing our carbon output. Touring is very important to us, a large part of the joy and passion of what we do, and we are committed to finding more responsible ways of doing it.

We asked Best Foot Forward to compare two different kinds of tours we’ve done recently in America: an out of town ‘big gig’/amphitheatre tour, and a smaller theatre tour in city centres.

We wanted to find out which kind of touring has the lowest carbon and environmental impact ‘per person entertained‘. We had lots of information to work out our own carbon footprint, but we had to make some assumptions about the fans’ footprint; how they travel, and how much beer they drink when they get to the show!

This is what we found:

* Fan travel and consumption made up 86% of the Theatre tour and 97% of the 　　Amphitheatre tour.
* Of the band’s touring impact – Travel and energy use accounted for 60% (Theatre tour) and ~40% (Amphitheatre tour)
* International travel accounted for a further 34 – 40% of impacts.

Short of no-one coming to see us, we’d like to share with our fans some ways of reducing this – our early research suggests that how you come to our shows can significantly reduce the tour’s carbon output. To help achieve better results, we’re trying to play as many shows as possible in city centres because of their better transport links. From the Best Foot Forward report, the rough figures below give you an example of how much of a difference you can make.

For the big shows:

* If average car occupancy increased from 2.2 to 3, the whole tour’s overall CO2 output would be reduced by 22%.
* Halving fans flying would reduce overall CO2 consumption by 5%
* And if 10% of car users travelled by bus it would reduce CO2 emissions by 7%

Where we can, we will be reducing our own carbon emissions, starting with sea freighting our gear. It’s 93% more efficient than air freighting, and if we ship our equipment to and from America, we save 47 tonnes of CO2. We will be doing this for touring in 2008, along with travelling as little as possible by air, avoiding chartered flights, and investigating more efficient road and rail transportation.

今年始め、僕達はオックスフォードにあるBest Foot Forwardという会社に僕らの炭素排出を減らそうという目的で、最近の2つのRadioheadツアーで排出する炭素や生態学的な二酸化炭素排出量を調べようと調査を依頼したんだ。
ツアーは僕達にはとても大事な事で、楽しみだったり夢中にれる大半を占めてるんだ。だからよりきちんとした方法を見つけることに専念してるんだ。

Best Foot Forward社に2つの異なる最近のアメリカツアーを比較するよう依頼したんだ。
郊外のでかいギグ/競技場級の会場をまわるツアーと、小規模の市内の劇場をまわるツアーとをね。

どうしたらより一人当たりの炭素排出量を低くできるか、またその環境影響について知りたかったんだ。
僕ら自身についてはある程度情報はあったんだけど、ファンについても考えなきゃいけなかった。
ライヴをみるのにどうやってまわってるのかとか、どれ位酒を消費するかとかね！。

調査でわかった事：
*ファンの移動および（資源等の）消費は劇場ツアーで86％、競技場ツアーで97％。
*バンドがツアーで与える影響– 移動とエネルギー使用量は、60%（劇場ツアー）、40%(競技場ツアー)を占める
*海外旅行による影響は、30〜40％。

誰も見に来ないっていうのは抜きで、これらを減らす方法をファンと共有したいんだ。
こうした初期段階の研究で、ツアーでの炭素排出量をかなり減らす事ができる方法が見えて来る。
より良い結果を出すためには、僕らはできるだけ交通の便のいい街の中心でショーを行うようにするとかね。
Best Foot Forward社からのレポートによる、どれだけの違いが出せるかという例を下記に大まかな数字を挙げておくよ。

大規模なライブ：
*自動車占有の平均が2.2〜3増加すれば、ツアー中の全体的なCO2排出率は22%削減できるであろう。
*空路を利用するファンを半分にすれば、5%削減できるであろう。
*10%の自動車ユーザーがバス利用にすれば、7%削減できるであろう。

僕達ができるところは、僕達が減らしていこうと思うんだ。機材は船便での輸送を始める。そうすれば空輸より93％も効率的なんだ。たとえば、アメリカへ、またはアメリカからの機材の運搬では47トンのCO2排出をおさえられる。
出来るだけ飛行機を使わず、貸切のフライトも避け、より効果的な陸地や電車移動を調査するとともに、僕達は2008年のツアーでこれ実践させていくつもりなんだ。

The End of The Beginning

Hello Everyone,

The download area that is “In Rainbows” will be shutting its doors on the 10th December 2007.

A big thank you to everyone who came and downloaded the music. It’s been the most positive thing we’ve done and we hope you shared the experience with others.

The discbox will still be available from the w.a.s.t.e store here until they have all gone. We then have no plans to make further stock.

For those of you who wish to buy In Rainbows in the usual way, it will be available on CD/Vinyl and download from traditional outlets from the 31st December 2007.

The record will be released by TBD Records in North America and XL Recordings for the rest of the world.

今日、英国の首相gordonが不都合な真実であるとしてやっと曖昧だった気候変動について語りだしたって聞いたよ。
これは僕がFriends of the earthと取り組んでることで、人々に一刻も早く何かをさせる良い法律を成立させようというキャンペーンが（少なくとも表面上は）うまくいってると...。
キャンペーンを支援したり、投書した全ての人の為にもこれが実際に目指しているになることを願うよ。....

i heard today that the british prime minister, gordon his name is, has finally stopped faffing about and is talking about climate change as the inconvenient truth that it is,

which ,being as i am involved with friends of the earth and the campaign to get a good law passed that really commits in the uk us to DO SOMETHINGfast, is (at least on the surface) a Good thing..

for the sake of all the people who have been helping in the campaign and have written to their letters i do hope that this is genuinely meant ....

up until now there has been not a lot of not a lot..

if there is a law then we all have to act. imagine if there was a similair law in the US? in AUstralia? in Japan? then there would be a giant ball rolling.. perhaps this one would be going in the right direction..
am i dreaming? i am not the only one.(ahem~)

Gordon Brown's pledge to make Britain a world leader in tackling climate change has been welcomed today by Friends of the Earth. But the environmental campaign group said his words must now be matched by urgent action to cut UK carbon dioxide emissions, which have risen since Labour came to power. This must include a comprehensive review of all Government policies and strengthening its proposals for a new law to cut UK carbon dioxide emissions, which is due to be discussed by Parliament next week.

"After a summer of lobbying, wriggling, and confusion, the?Government's apparent change of heart on renewable power is fantastic news, but will only be credible if new policies emerge to actually meet targets. Britain lags a long way behind most of our European neighbours on renewable power, despite having the greatest wind, wave and tidal resource in Europe. We should be able to contribute our fair share of the EU-wide renewable?energy commitment and source at least 20% of our energy from?renewables by 2020."

Friends of the Earth is calling on the Government to take urgent action on climate change including:

Strengthening proposals for a new climate change law.

Following a campaign led by Friends of the Earth through The Big Ask climate campaign (www.thebigask.com), the Government has agreed to introduce a new law to tackle climate change. This will be the first national legislation anywhere in the world to set legally-binding targets for cutting carbon dioxide emissions. Friends of the Earth says it must be strengthened to ensure a cut of at least 80 per cent in emissions by 2050, include pollution from Britain's share of international aviation and shipping, and set annual milestones to ensure that we stay on track. The bill is due to be discussed in Parliament next week and could be law within six months.

2. Boosting renewables, including

* Expanding offshore wind tenfold by 2020
* Rolling out CHP and micro-renewables to homes, community and?public buildings - through grants, public procurement and a feed-in?tariff to guarantee a premium price for the electricity they?generate.?
* Backing projects to demonstrate the potential of promising?technologies such as vertical axis offshore wind turbines and tidal?lagoons
* Increasing by tenfold research and development into new? technologies - such as wave, solar, and energy storage, and?transmission technologies, such as hydrogen fuel cells and advanced?cables.
* Championing major international renewable infrastructure?projects - including concentrated solar power (CSP) in North?Africa; offshore wind in the North Sea; and an extensive high- voltage direct current grid so that renewable electricity can be distributed across Europe and?surrounding regions.

3. Surface transport
The Government must tackle climate change from transport. This should include scrapping motorway-widening schemes and increasing investment in public transport and other low-carbon transport solutions.

4. Aviation

Plans to allow airports to expand should be frozen and more must be done to make the cost of flying reflect the environmental damage that it causes. Greater investment in rail could make this an attractive alternative to short-haul flights.

5. Budgetary measures are required to make it easier and cheaper for people to go green

ModeselektorのThomとのコラボ曲" ‘The White Flash”が収録されたニューアルバム"Happyh Birthday!"が先日発売されましたが、コラボレーションする経緯をFact Magazineに語っているようです。
「去年、Thom Yorkeに"Eraser"の“Skip Divided”をリミックスしてくれいかと頼まれたんだ。僕らはその機会に1曲歌ってくれないかと頼んだんだ。彼は「いいよ」と言ってくれて、こうなったわけ。もちろん僕達は彼が音楽界の大物だってわかっているけど、彼は僕らが正しい道を歩んでるとすでに数年前に僕らに言葉で伝えてくれてたんだ。まだ一緒にやったなんて信じられないって気分だよ。....ホントに誇りに思うよ。」
